One of seven patients that we’ll be flying back to the Kalahari later this week is this Cape Ground Squirrel who has just completed his rehab journey with Friends of Free Wildlife and is ready to start the next phase of his life in the wild.
I’m sure they probably don’t eat strawberries in the wild, but he sure does like them.
Interesting facts about these little guys is that the males and females live apart from each other. The girls will live in groups of up to five individuals and the males with up to twenty, with the oldest male being in charge.
On hot days, they use their tail as an umbrella to block out the sun. And lastly, not only do they like nuts, they also have the largest…mmmm… testicles, proportionally to any mammal, relative of their body size.
Which basically means, if you ever say that someone’s got balls like a squirrel, it’s actually a compliment.
